Newly crowned Lowland League Cup champions Cumbernauld Colts travel to Christie Gillies Park to take on Civil Service Strollers on Wednesday, 25th March, 7:45pm KO.
Last time out
‘Colts claim their second Lowland League Cup title thanks to a dramatic 3-2 victory over Gala Fairydean Rovers at Newtown Park.
We would struggle early in the match under windy conditions, having to defend some early pressure whilst creating good chances on the counter.
Despite this, it would be Gala Fairydean to strike first in the final through Liam Fagan in the 34th minute, seeing ‘Colts go into the break a goal behind.
‘Colts would come out from the break with no choice but to improve in order to get back into the final. Thankfully, though, this would come quickly.
In the 51st minute, Josh Farquhar would get the ball into the back of the net from a scrappy corner and put us on level terms in the final.
The ‘Colts support had barely stopped celebrating as just under 120 seconds later, Danny Hatfield would pop up with yet another important goal to put us in front in the 53rd minute!
However, just as it looked like ‘Colts might see out the final with a 2-1 victory, Jamie Semple found the equaliser for Gala Fairydean in the 81st.
But it wasn’t over. 90+3’. Outside the box. Aiden McLaughlin. Deflection? Maybe. Wind-assisted? Who cares. ‘Colts were in front with only a few minutes left.
Gala Fairydean had one more chance from a corner which rattled off the crossbar, but it was cleared successfully, and the referee blew his whistle, crowning ‘Colts champions.
Previous meetings
Civil Service Strollers have a clear lead on ‘Colts in the head-to-head record between the two sides, with four wins, whilst ‘Colts have two wins and the other game ending in a draw.
‘Colts added that second win earlier this season, with a 4-0 win over Strollers at Broadwood. The win came through goals from Adam Fernie, Abraham Osemeke, Billy Mortimer and Josh Jack.
Opposition focus
Civil Service Strollers will be reasonably disappointed with their season so far, as they sit 14th in the table with nine wins, four draws, and fifteen defeats.
With the season coming to an end, Strollers will be looking for a strong, positive finish and will want to end the season further up the table. We expect a tough match and are looking forward to making the trip.
Squad news
No major updates in terms of squad news ahead of this Wednesday’s clash.
We will likely head to Christie Gillies Park with the same squad that won the cup on Sunday afternoon.
See you there!
Why not get along to Christie Gillies Park to back the cup champions once more? Your turnout at the final was incredible, and we hope to see you all more often!
