History

Cumbernauld Colts FC was awarded full membership of the Scottish FA and admitted to the SLFL (Scottish Lowland Football League) in 2015. This was the club’s first step into the world of senior professional football. However, our history is much more extensive than that, going back to our formation in 1969.

We have a long history in Cumbernauld. Indeed, we were the New Town’s first youth football club when we formed. During the 1970s and early 1980s, we were the town’s biggest youth football club, and several youngsters during that era went on to become professionals. These included Derek Whyte (Celtic, Aberdeen, Middlesbrough and Scotland International), Jackie McNamara (Dunfermline, Celtic, Wolves, Aberdeen, Falkirk and Scotland International) and Dougie Bell (St Mirren, Aberdeen, Rangers and Hibernian).

The club went into a period of decline in the 1980s and 1990s with no infrastructure in place to bring on new teams each year, and some teams disbanded. The last remaining team folded during season 1998/99.

In 1999, the club was reborn and re-branded with the launch of a new, single youth age group team. Over the next five years, we steadily built back up. We’re now considered one of the biggest clubs in the Central Region, if not the biggest.

Our community club offers grassroots football, a Football Academy and partnerships with local schools and soccer centres through the Colts in the Community programme.
