Match report

It was a midweek trip down south to Palmerston Park for Colts as they opened their KDM Evolution Trophy campaign with a 4-0 away defeat to Queen of the South.

Queen of the South made the brighter start, providing the opening goal after just 11 minutes when a counter-attack paid off for Cole Coughlin.

Colts were almost caught out again immediately afterwards, but David Wilson managed to get a save away to prevent Queen of the South from doubling their advantage.

The hosts did end up finding a second five minutes later, with Liam Smith extending their lead in the 15th minute. Colts looked to respond, with their closest attempt coming in the 22nd minute when a shot from Aiden McLaughlin struck the crossbar from distance.

Queen of the South continued to threaten as the half progressed and secured a third in the 27th minute, with Coughlin grabbing his second of the evening as Colts went into the break trailing 3–0.

As the second half got underway, the hosts continued to control much of proceedings, pushing Colts to make their first change at the turn of the hour as Callum Graham replaced Abraham Osemeke.

Queen of the South added a fourth goal to their tally in the 71st minute when Brodie Dair took a chance on a one-on-one duel with Wilson.

Still searching for an opportunity, Colts made a double change shortly afterwards, with Alex Mann and Danny Hatfield introduced in place of Olly McDonald and Aiden McLaughlin. The change also brought an early end to Aiden’s evening following a head knock.

A further two substitutions were made in the dying minutes of the game with Harrison Howe and Liam Brown making way for debutantes Charlie Rundell and Rory Marley from the Under 20s.

As the game drew to a close, the hosts came close to finding a fifth when a powerful effort from distance went narrowly wide.

Four minutes of additional time were played, but ultimately the final whistle sounded, as Colts finished out the game with a 4-0 defeat.

Colts will now look to take the positives from their first KDM Evolution Trophy outing into the remaining five cup games.

Jack Devlin was awarded Man of the Match following an impressive performance from an unfamiliar position.
